Speedo generally over reads so 165 say on the speedo is probably 155 in reality. I've been at a GPS verified 158mph on a RAF base runway (not the RS3) and it felt crazy fast. On the same day there was a V10 RS6 there who bagged the highest top speed ... 198mph!

My understanding was speedo's are only accurate up to 30mph. After that, they are set to be higher than the actual speed. So at 155 mph, the speedo very well read 165mph.

I've been in the passenger of a stage 2 s3 with 3 people including driver. Hit an indicated 167mph and would have kept going till we run out of road. Speedo is pretty much accurately inline with a 10hz gps. So gps speed wise it would have been 165/166

While speedos over read, surely though the point is that it would stop at what the car thinks is 155?
As an example of over read, though in a McLaren - speedo reads 241 KM and phone (GPS) reads 221 KM - 137 vs 149 mph so yeah quite a difference.
Phone gps only uses a 1hz gps module so it will be far more inaccurate. Use a proper dedicated gps such as vbox and you'll get a much more accurate reading.

Surely more accurate than the speedo though? Of course a dedicated device will be better though.
Speedo reading is just read of a sensor built into the transmission. My speedo in my s3 reads 60mph while my vbox reads 59.5mph, 100mph reads 99.5mph so my speedo is pretty much as accurate as can be me for me.

I had my FN2 type R at a 130 mph a long time ago that was more than enough for me, cars like this are too light, larger heavier cars feel a lot more planted at higher speeds
Eh, my Cayman was quite planted, even at 140mph- and it was barely knocking on 3,000lb.

Had my S3 SB on a European road at 140mph and bottled it as the front end was feeling very light and any small pot hole could have been disastrous. At 140 it was still pulling a fair bit and felt like it had much more than an extra 15mph
This. Had my 17 Saloon up to an indicated 137 and bottled it as it felt very wobbly.
